Service Description

Weekend Intensive: Swedish Color Overlay Developed in Swedish glass factories (Orrefors) in the late 19th century, the color overlay presents a unique opportunity to manipulate color on the outside of a glass piece. The precursor to the Graal and Ariel techniques, this class is dedicated to the successful mastery of the overlay itself. Participants will learn methods for manipulating the overlay while hot, as well as other foundational Swedish glassblowing techniques and aesthetics. The Swedish Overlay is the process of joining two separate bubbles of glass on separate blowpipes and turning one inside out over the other. This process is used to bring an even layer of colored glass to or near the surface of the piece, thereby making it accessible to carve through the layers of colored glass after the piece has been annealed and cooled to room temperature. Please note: This intensive will concentrate on the hot shop portion of the Swedish Overlay. There will be a lecture ( demo ) on carving and sandblasting your blanks. Our cold working studio will be available for all students for this purpose once the course has concluded. Each student will have lots of blow time to create multiple blanks. This is an amazing opportunity to learn about layering colors and then carving imagery. Once the images are carved, you can bring up your blanks in a pickup oven, pick it up on a blowpipe, heat them, and gather clear glass. Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced
