Beginner Glassblowing Level 2: Building on the Fundamentals This course builds upon the foundational skills learned in Beginner Glassblowing Level 1, taking your hot glass manipulation to the next level. Students will refine their core techniques while exploring new forms and processes. Emphasis will be placed on developing consistency, control, and an understanding of glass behavior in the hot shop environment. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to: Refine Core Techniques: Improve gathering, shaping, blowing, and tooling skills with greater precision and efficiency. Introduce New Techniques: Explore techniques such as color application (frit, powders, stringers), and basic pattern development. Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Learn to anticipate and address common challenges encountered in the hot shop. Enhance Understanding of Glass Properties: Deepen knowledge of glass viscosity, temperature control, and heat management. Foster Creative Exploration: Begin to develop personal expression and explore individual design ideas within the medium. Course Content: Review and Refinement: Reinforcement of fundamental skills, including gathering, marvering, blocking, and shaping. Advanced Form Development: Progressing from simple forms to more complex shapes and variations. Color Application: Introduction to using frit, powders, and stringers to add color and surface decoration. Basic Patterning: Exploring simple cane techniques and other methods for creating patterns in glass. Tool Usage: Expanding knowledge and proficiency with a wider range of glassblowing tools. Hot Shop Safety: Reinforcing safe practices and protocols within the hot shop environment. Critiques and Discussions: Engaging in constructive feedback sessions to foster growth and learning. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Beginner Glassblowing Level 1 or equivalent experience. Students should be comfortable with basic glassblowing techniques. Materials: All necessary tools and equipment are provided. Students are responsible for the cost of glass used in their projects. Information regarding glass purchasing will be provided at the beginning of the course. Note: This course is physically demanding and requires standing for extended periods. Students should be in good physical condition. Long hair must be tied back, and appropriate attire (non-synthetic clothing, closed-toe shoes) is required for safety.
